La Mortella Gardens

An oasis of exotic and tropical beauty

La Mortella Gardens

Located in the municipality of Forio, on the Zaro promontory, La Mortella Gardens are a true oasis of beauty.
Created starting in 1958 by Lady Susana Walton, the Argentine-born wife of English composer Sir William Walton, the gardens were designed by landscape architect Russell Page and later developed over 50 years with Lady Walton’s personal vision and care.
An outstanding project whose botanical importance has been widely recognized — so much so that a new orchid hybrid has been named after her: Miltassia Lady Susana Walton.

The Waltons arrived in Ischia in 1949, and when they acquired the land that would become their garden, they were inspired by the myrtle bushes (Myrtus communis) growing among the rocks — from which the estate took its name.

Extending over two hectares, the garden is divided into a lower area in the Valley and an upper area on the Hill, terraced with dry-stone walls.
The two levels are connected by stairs, paths, and trails that run alongside water features — making it possible to cultivate aquatic plants as well.
The incredible variety of rare and exotic species makes La Mortella a true botanical garden, offering guests a unique experience through evocative landscapes enriched by rock formations, streams, fountains, and three tropical greenhouses: the Victoria House, the Orchid House, and the Temple of the Sun.

Today, La Mortella Gardens are owned and managed by the William Walton Foundation and La Mortella, according to Lady Walton’s will and artistic vision.
